Due to the coronavirus pandemic that swept the world in 2020, the Festival scheduled to take place from 12 to 23 May could not be held. Initially postponed until July in the hope that an improvement in the health situation would allow it to go ahead, the event was finally obliged to reinvent itself and take on a completely different form in order to respect the government measures in force.

A Special Selection

In light of this unprecedented situation, the Festival was more determined than ever to affirm its role of support for cinematographic creation by maintaining its Official Selection. A unique Selection composed of 56 feature films and 28 shorts grouped under the name “Cannes 2020” which has been able to travel the globe thanks to the unprecedented solidarity that has been established between festivals and major film events.

An online Marché du Film

Another key annual event on the Croisette, the Marché du Film and its Village International also had to be reinvented and were held for the first time from 22 to 26 June in a 100% online version.

Renamed Marché du Film Online for the occasion, the successful event allowed film industry professionals from all over the world to gather around numerous virtual happenings: round tables, conferences, screenings and 2.0 negotiations.

3 days of “Cannes Special”

From 27 to 29 October, the Festival and the town’s Mayor, David Lisnard, driven by the common desire not to see 2020 as a wasted year for cinema, mobilised to organise a more modest version of the event.

This “Cannes Special 2020”, open to the general public and dedicated to discovery, welcomed 11 short films and 17 films from the Cinéfondation school, which held their own competition, screenings, a jury composed of Damien Bonnard, Rachid Bouchareb, Claire Burger, Charles Gillibert, Dea Kulumbegashvili and Céline Sallette, and finally their own prize list. Catdog directed by Ashmita Guha Neogi won the Cinefondation’s first prize, and Egypt’s Sameh Alaa won the Palme d’or for short film for his film I am Afraid to Forget Your Face.

Four films from the Official Selection were also shown on the screens of the Grand Théâtre Lumière to mark the occasion: Un triomphe  (The Big Hit) by Emmanuel Courcol, Les Deux Alfred (French Tech) by Bruno Podalydès, Asa Ga Kuru (True Mothers) by Japanese director Naomi Kawase, and Beginning by Georgian director Dea Kulumbegashvili.
